- The long minute hand points at the 7. Count by 5s from the 12: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35. That's thirty-five minutes past the hour.

Where children slip
The long hand is on the 7, but that means 35 minutes, not 7. The time is 7:35, not 7:07.
The short hand looks close to the 8, so it's tempting to say 8:35. It hasn't reached the 8 yet, so the hour is still 7.
Twenty-five to eight is before 8 o'clock. Read as past, it would be 8:25, which is a very different time.
