Analog and Digital Time Worksheets

A child who can move between a clock, numbers and words really understands the time.

Match analog to digital

Six clocks and six digital times to match by letter.

Write it in words

Six clocks with a line for writing the time in words.

Words to clock

Nine times in words, each under a clock with no hands to draw on.

What time will it be?

Six clocks with an amount of time to add, and a line for the new time.

Why the three forms matter

Digital clocks are everywhere, so many children can read 2:45 without having any idea how far away 3 o'clock is. The clock with hands shows time as a distance round a circle, and the words show how people say it. Moving between all three is what makes it stick.

That's how the game works too: each mini game gives one form and asks for another.

Questions

Should kids learn analog or digital first?

Analog o'clock and half past first, with digital alongside. Reading 3:30 off a screen is easy, but the clock with hands is what teaches what the numbers mean.

When do children learn elapsed time?

Usually in third grade in the US, with simple versions (one hour later) from second grade.

Is the telling time game really free?

Yes. The whole game plays free in your browser, with no signup, no ads and no time limit. An iPhone app is on the way with offline play, a forest trail and a parent view, but the web game stays free.

We're building a Clockwood app with what needs a real app: every time read aloud, offline play, and a parent view of which times have stuck and which are still tricky. The full game stays free here on the web.
